QuickTime Videos: Wheelchair Crash Testing

Crash Simulations with Software

Researchers, product developers and manufacturing engineers use computer modeling or software simulation to test product ideas under crash loads. Engineers use simulations to help identify solutions or experiment with changes in product design. For example, using software, an engineer can experiment with the location of attachment hardware for an occupant restraint or effects of the angle or the stiffness of a seat back. This computer technology saves the expense of crashing multiple wheelchairs in sled tests.

First, engineers build a computer model. Then actual forces and movements observed and measured in a sled test are used to validate the model. Modeling is another tool that is used to determine loading on the test dummy and the wheelchair. It has been a valuable tool in the effort to move ahead with new transportation safety technologies.

The following videos show simulation of sled test in which 4-point securement, a 3 point occupant restraint and a WC19 compliant wheelchair are used.
